From vehicle-centric spaces to community-activated hotspots

New York Times columnist Julie Lasky joins Woods Bagot West Coast Design Leader Matt Ducharme and Emmy award winner James Sanders at Rizzoli to explore how the Los Angeles mobility revolution could once again help reshape metropolises worldwide.

Renewing the Dream: The Mobility Revolution and Future of Los Angeles is generating excitement across major metropolises, recently drawing in a full house of New Yorkers on a Friday night and spurring an interactive Q&A session.

An engaged crowd at Rizzoli Bookstore listens intently as Woods Bagot Principal Ducharme shares how he and his colleagues approach the ambitious idea of transforming car-centric spaces into community-activated hotspots.

He notes that architects can design great civic and public spaces when they empathize with and understand a community’s cultural and historical context.

The book-based conversation has inspired an impactful review from Archidose’s John Hill, who noted Renewing the Dream is a “beautifully produced coffee table book … full of striking visuals by Woods Bagot and from the worlds of art, photography, and cinema”.

In his post, Hill highlights the salient themes of the book and original design case studies by Woods Bagot and global place consultancy ERA-co, which contributed all spatial analytics, data research, and case studies exploring the continual impact of transport electrification; the re-appropriation and adaptability of previous vacant parking lots; and the contextual reimagination of conventional gas stations through immersive, flexible, and tech-driven designs in the book.

Enjoy the full video recording of Ducharme, Lasky, and Sanders discussing the impact of the green mobility revolution in Los Angeles and major cities worldwide as they explore tech, mobility, and the opportunities for architects to engage with culture when addressing future urban design imperatives below.
