Pearl Huang on cross-disciplinary design and urban renewal at World Cities Culture Forum

Pearl Huang, Woods Bagot Director, and Shanghai Studio Chair was recently featured in an insightful interview by the National Business Daily (NBD). The discussion took place during her attendance at the International Creative Design Industry Salon, part of 2023 World Cities Culture Forum held in Chengdu.

The wide-ranging conversation with NBD covered diverse topics, from the significance of locality to the value of cross-disciplinary in design and the development of southwest China urban renewal.

Rebuild with locality.

In response to the thoughts on “iconic” buildings – outstanding in appearance but lack human scale – that sprung up in the process of China’s urban renewal, Pearl pointed out that the rebuild of old neighborhoods must respect and preserve “locality”, respecting their historical context and cultural heritage. The “flow” that comes with “internet celebrity” check-in spots is hard to retain. Architecture should not only stay on the “icon” level but must also have “content” to address the increasing demand for a sense of experience and belonging for local communities. A well collaboration with the upstream and downstream enterprises is also vital to the future development and innovation.

Cross-disciplinary approach requires humble in design.

Recognizing the diversity of lifestyles and cultural nuances across people and cities, Pearl reiterated the necessity for architects to stay humble and always focus on cross-disciplinary, cross-sectoral and cross-cultural interactions, which allows them to design with user experience at the core, creating spaces that cater to specific needs of various communities, striking a balance between social and economic benefits.

Young and Inclusive urban renewal in Southwest China.

With intense site visits to urban regeneration projects in Chengdu, Pearl highlighted that the city’s urban renewal practices are “young and inclusive”, just like the city itself. The new resonances with the old and embraces the future through cutting-edge digital technology. Much like Woods Bagot’s many projects over the years, the urban regeneration should always focus on “people architecture” and take into account functionality, iconic appeal, local culture, community wellbeing and commercial success as a whole.
