As an addition to one of North America’s top ten busiest airports, the C Concourse Expansion at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) nearly triples the size of the concourse, creating a new destination through placemaking, sustainability, and signature architecture.
The project’s concept of bringing in and seeing out fosters a connection to the Pacific Northwest through its materiality, framed sightlines of the outdoors, public art, and climate consciousness. The Concourse’s interior reflects the textures and activities of the region’s renowned artisanal markets, and a marketplace sits at the heart of the concourse, providing dining and retail options. The Grand Stairs at C invite travelers to linger with seating that overlooks looks a performance space for local musicians, as well as views of the surrounding landscape.
The C Concourse Expansion is the first project to apply the Port of Seattle’s new Sustainable Project Framework and sets the precedent for all future capital projects. Sustainable features include: rooftop photovoltaics, fossil fuel–free systems for heating and hot water, electrochromic glazing for windows, dishwashing capabilities for vendors reducing the need for disposal dishware, embodied carbon reduction strategies, low-flow water fixtures, and biophilic design principles. The project will pursue a LEED Silver certification.
Through these measures, the SEA C Concourse Expansion brings an authentic, sustainable, and deeply memorable passenger experience to the Pacific Northwest’s largest and fastest-growing airport.
