Woods Bagot’s Melbourne, Beijing and Hong Kong studios receive WAN nod

All four of Woods Bagot submissions into the prestigious World Architecture News (WAN) awards have been shortlisted.

Deakin Law School Building has been recognised in the Education – Higher education and research facilities category. Creating a beacon and gateway to the Melbourne’s Burwood CampusDeakin Law School delivers five levels of flexible, media-rich learning spaces that cut across the continuum of formality and informality, with students able to move seamlessly between modes of learning. The building provides a point of orientation, wayfinding, and enhanced campus experience.

Also out of the Melbourne studio, 405 Bourke Street has been shortlisted in the highly competitive Commercial – Offices and Studios category. Known as ‘the lantern’, 405 Bourke Street’s softly glowing façade visually activates the urban fabric of Melbourne CBD, by creating an inviting landmark that adds character and a sense of simple elegance to the bustling part of the city.

With Woods Bagot responsible for two of the seven projects competing in the Commercial category, Sunshine Financial Center from the Beijing studio has also been recognised.

Located in the core area of Beijing CBD, the 120,000 sqm Sunshine Financial Center tower meets the ground as a square, but morphs gradually into an ellipse as it ascends skyward, twisting and tapering on the way up. Similar to a traditional Chinese landscape painting, the glass gradually turns light blue as the tower climbs.

AI Plaza out of the Hong Kong studio has been shortlisted in the Specialist – Façade category. The design team transformed the plaza into a welcoming and exciting retail destination with the most efficient means — the new façade used a “box of surprises” as the design concept. The new design successfully turned the façade into a Vertical Gallery, echoing the surrounding cultural atmosphere and, at the same time, increasing advertisement opportunities.

This year, World Architecture News is hosting the awards digitally on the 16th and 17th November. Tune in then to find out the winners.
