A luxurious makeover on a compact scale

Great Southern Rail Platinum Club

The reimagined Platinum Club Lounge for Great Southern Rail (GSR) creates a unique experience for rail tourists with its new, tailored spaces. This contemporary design scheme, which puts the tourist’s comfort at the forefront, positions GSR as a leader within the global luxury travel market and builds on the rich heritage of the Australian interstate passenger train operator.

To reinvigorate its outdated locomotives, the railroad company’s passenger train operator worked with Woods Bagot to reimagine the national icon. The result is a lounge designed to be easily maintained, and to grow old gracefully while improving on current operational performance.

Project details

The restrained material palette is inspired by the landscape through which it travels. The interior selection and the large windows allow the vistas of the Australian Outback to be the hero during the day, while evening settings allow the internal spaces to be more mellow. Curating a flexible space that could be adapted throughout the course of a journey was paramount to the project’s success.

Designed to accommodate meal times as well as lounge functions, while being a public extension of the passenger’s suite, the design illustrates innovation on a compact scale. Adjustable lighting levels and directions coupled with window treatments allow the space to change in function and mood to suit the time of day and setting of choice.
