Construction progress on Ripponlea Terrace

Construction is underway on Ripponlea Terrace in Elsternwick Gardens, Milieu Property’s ambitious new lifestyle precinct, with architecture and interior design by Woods Bagot.

Construction partner Brady Constructions says the installation of the crane onsite marks an important milestone for the project, signposting the commencement of vertical progress.

“Gearing up the crane is no mean feat: it requires precise positioning, coordinated lifts, and significant preparation leading up to this moment,” construction partners Brady said.

Construction kick-off was marked with a Smoking Ceremony at the display suite site in Elsternwick earlier this year.

This once-in-a-generation opportunity on the historic grounds of the former ABC Studios offers residents their own private gate into the 14-acre Rippon Lea Estate.

Project leader and Woods Bagot Senior Associate Laura Haywood says the architecture draws on cinematic traditions, manipulating light and shadow to create a curated selection of homes that feel emotive, grounded and immersed in nature.

“We drew inspiration from the cinematic legacy of the site, creating framed apertures over the gardens while harnessing the dynamic interplay of light and shadow,” says Haywood.

Interior design leader Marcia Ascencio says the interior design draws inspiration from the exterior architecture and surrounding local context, creating a visual link between the interior spaces and the heritage-listed gardens.

“For the interior concept, we took an ‘inside out’ approach, bringing influences of the natural local surroundings into the scheme of the residences,” Ascencio says. “The interiors provide a composed, polished base, inspired by the site’s natural conditions. The space provides an elevated canvas for refined materiality and spatial planning that maximises framed views to the gardens, celebrating the landscape and crafting a greater connection with place.”

Treading a careful balance between overdesigning and creating spaces devoid of identity, Ascencio adds the interiors team have aspired to create “a canvas – not a finished painting”, providing a balanced, tasteful, and well-resolved base onto which residents can project their own style and personalities.

“We use a gentle palette of mid-toned timber, hand-sanded stainless steel surfaces, and rarefied natural stone, tied together with a captivating solid glass wall light by Volker Haug,” continues Ascencio. “All these elements create a seamless base for residents to overlay with their own tastes and styles.”

Paired with thoughtfully designed wellness amenities, sustainable architecture, and over 40 percent of the site dedicated to landscaped green spaces, Elsternwick Gardens delivers a lifestyle offering almost impossible to replicate.

At completion, Elsternwick Gardens will comprise three distinct residential offerings within expansive private gardens: Gordon Place, with architecture by Woods Bagot and interiors by K.P.D.O. Architecture + Interior Design; Ripponlea Terrace, with architecture and interiors by Woods Bagot; and the Garden Pavilion, with architecture by Woods Bagot and interiors by Flack Studio.
