Design Shenzhen x RIBA: Architech City Forum

Following the resounding success of the 2023 RIBA China Landmark 100 awards program, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has kicked off its roadshow journey with first stop at 2024 Design Shenzhen with a themed forum: Architect City, held at Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center. During the exhibition the RIBA’s 2023 China Landmark 100 projects also were showcased, two of which are from Woods Bagot.

Woods Bagot Principal Christopher Lye was invited as a panelist alongside other esteemed industry leaders, shared his insightful thoughts on the future of urban complex development. Here are the main takeaways:

  • A curated design brief that focuses on understanding the passions and behaviors of the target audience moving beyond age range should be made. This will be a guidebook for architects and designers to create personalized urban experiences that align with the diverse preferences and needs.
  • Accessibility and mobility is the key to urban activation, which requires pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, efficient public transportation, and vibrant retail streets.
  • Placemaking will be a differentiator for cities in the future. A place that resonate with residents and reflect the essence of a city will foster a sense of belonging and pride among the residence in a local community.
  • Last but not least, how resilience of a city depends on how much the buildings and spaces are designed with sustainability in mind to reduce the environmental impact and promote the long-term well being of urban areas.

This forum also sheds light on the methodology and practical exploration of the involvement of building technology in urban development and explores the future development direction of architecture and cities from three aspects: urban renewal and sustainable development, building technology and digital design, future habitat, and urban complex.
