Te Pae
Designed by Woods Bagot, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre has been named Oceania’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre for 2025 at World Travel Awards.
Now in their 32nd year, the World Travel Awards serve to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.
This year’s event was hosted at the InterContinental Grand Stanford, Hong Kong, and attended by Asia and Oceania’s leading travel brands.
Te Pae General Manager Ross Steele says the team was honoured to receive this award in a category represented by a prestigious lineup of internationally-renowned convention centres.
“To have our venue acknowledged on the world stage is a moment of immense pride and a true testament to the dedication, passion, and excellence our team has poured into every event since we opened our doors just three and a half years ago,” says Steele.
“It is extraordinary to be held in such esteemed company. The work of the other finalists in our category has inspired and influenced us, and we’re extremely proud to stand alongside them.”
Completed in 2022, Te Pae was one of seventeen anchor projects initiated as part of the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan in the wake of the 2011 earthquake. Located in the heart of Christchurch, the new building is capable of hosting up to 2,000 delegates for a variety of national and international events and includes a 1,400-delegate auditorium, a 3,600-square-metre exhibition hall and 1,600-square-metres of meeting rooms overlooking the nearby Victoria Square.
Woods Bagot Director Bruno Mendes says the design takes its cues from a rich tapestry of local scenery and embedded cultural history. “We strived for an architecture that relates to place, geographically and culturally, to create a civic landmark that would resonate with the people of Christchurch,” says Mendes.
Previous winners for the Meetings & Conference Centre category for World Travel Awards include Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and International Convention Centre Sydney.
Te Pae Christchurch has also been selected as a World nominee in the World Travel Awards 2025 – the highest category in the program. Voting on the awards, which can be cast by travel professionals, media and tourism consumers, runs from 6th – 26th October, with the winners announced on 6th December.
