Six architects and designers from Woods Bagot’s New York studio recently volunteered as mentors with the ACE Mentor Program of Greater New York (ACE GNY), helping local high school students explore careers in architecture, engineering and construction during the 2026-27 program year.
ACE GNY is a free after-school program that introduces high school students to careers in architecture, engineering and construction. During the 2026-27 program year, more than 2,400 students from over 420 schools across the New York metropolitan area participated, supported by more than 600 industry volunteers.
Over 600 industry professionals volunteered their time and energy to mentor local youths in the field of design, engineering and construction. These included six of our architects and designers, continuing our long-standing involvement in the ACE GNY program dating back around a decade:
Throughout the program, our mentors guided students through collaborative design projects, introduced industry concepts and software tools, and helped develop skills in teamwork, presentations and public speaking. They also provided guidance on scholarship applications, college admissions and career pathways.
“Mentorship plays a crucial role in creating pathways into our industry and ensuring young people can see themselves in careers across architecture, design and the built environment,” comments Sergio Sandoval, Associate at Woods Bagot. “The enthusiasm, creativity and commitment shown by the students throughout the program ensured it was a very rewarding experience for all those involved.”
“This year’s mentors did a phenomenal job providing critical guidance to seniors on their teams, writing letters of recommendation and reviewing essays for the ACE GNY Scholarship,” adds Marcos Diaz Gonzalez, Chairperson of the ACE Mentor Program of Greater NY. “By the end of the program season, the mentors successfully guided students in their own design project, which they presented to family, friends and colleagues. The success of this program is possible thanks to industry leaders such as Woods Bagot, who allow staff to mentor the next generation of industry professionals.”
