Woods Bagot designed the Adelaide workplace for Mutual Trust, Australia’s leading modern Family Office. Mutual Trust provides integrated family office advisory, wealth and professional services to several hundred of Australia’s most successful families, family businesses, trustees and individuals.
Founded in 1921, Mutual Trust’s 100-year legacy has fostered an ingrained philosophy of trust and integrity. With a reputation for building purposeful, long-term relationships, Mutual Trust has supported families over generations with the strategic succession and stewardship of their assets.
For the new workplace, Mutual Trust sought a space that communicated its values of endurance, consistency, and permanence to clients, while providing a functional, future-ready workplace to support its team.
Front of House spaces, from arrival through to reception, greet guests with familiar touchpoints and nostalgic motifs of an elegant familial home: a credenza at entry, sweeping timber joinery, and backlit display shelves lined with books.
“The Mutual Trust workplace embraces an intimate footprint, invoking the warmth and hospitality of a stately family home,” says Woods Bagot Director Rosina Di Maria. “Elevated familiarity is driven by nostalgic detail and material tactility, resulting in a narrative-based approach to heritage.”
As an organisation with a wealth of surviving history, heritage references have been woven throughout the scheme and overlaid with contemporary detail. Originally founded by W. L. Baillieu and his siblings, founder portraits now hang opposite reception. Black and bronze detailing drawn from the dignified portraits is echoed in the material palette, reinforcing values of family cohesion, legacy, and confidence.
“Our scheme celebrates the organisation’s rich history, characterised by understated luxury, refined materiality and attention to detail,” says Woods Bagot Associate Principal Emma Smith.
Light has been deployed softly and diffusely, distilling warmth and exuding welcome. A restrained yet richly layered material palette is complemented by accents of colour used with intent—gold velvet drapery, bronze detailing, veined marble, and cherrywood timber create gentle drama and polished professionalism.
Soft edges in sweeping timber joinery carve a meandering experiential journey through the space. Curated moments framed by gallery-like portals generate curiosity and delight, with an eclectic art selection supplied by Hill Smith Art. Sculptural elements add subtle theatre, including a reception plinth formed from folded bronze over backlit stone.
Mutual Trust Partner and Head of South Australia Brad Simmons says the new workplace translates the organisation’s purpose into experience, capturing the essence of both people and place.
“The new workplace captures the essence of Mutual Trust and signals the next phase of our presence in South Australia,” says Simmons. “It creates a strong first impression for our clients — one that feels warm, confident and considered — while clearly expressing our organisational values. The space has been incredibly well received by both clients and staff, and supports a culture where people feel comfortable, supported and proud of the environment they work in.”
