Talk to Katy Mercer about Workplace Interiors
This investment firm partners with growth-stage companies, nurturing them through critical phases of development and positioning them to flourish over time. Their new 16,000 sqf San Francisco headquarters included significant interior enhancements focused on improving functionality and reinforcing brand expression. Approximately 30% of the existing floorplate was reconfigured to enhance circulation and overall workplace efficiency.
The design approach emphasizes high quality materials like shou sugi ban, black-stained fumed eucalyptus, deep walnut, and hand-applied plaster. Dark walls act as a backdrop, directing attention first to the sweeping city views, then allowing materials, artwork, and people to emerge as you move deeper into the space.
A mirrored ceiling creates the illusion of height while pulling in reflections of the San Francisco skyline. Acting as both furniture and sculpture, a monolithic boulder forms the reception desk. An expanded break area doubles as an all-hands space, shifting easily from casual conversation to firm-wide gatherings. Along corridors and in offices, employee selected artwork lines the walls.
This San Francisco headquarters grew out of a strong alignment with the client and a shared willingness to push into a darker, higher-contrast palette, something we’re rarely asked to explore. Reworking a third of the plan improved flow, while allowing material, light, and the city beyond to stand out.
