Rethinking aged care with Woods Bagot and the Geneva Association

Pearl Huang, Woods Bagot Director and Shanghai Studio Chair was recently honored to join fellow thought leaders at the Geneva Association’s 2023 Health & Ageing Conference in Shanghai. She was involved in a roundtable discussion titled “Rethinking Housing and Urban Design for Aged-Friendly Cities.”

The conference, generously co-organized by China Taiping, was themed “Demographic shifts: Rethinking the status quo”. The event aimed to bring key stakeholders from across Asia to delve into the profound demographic changes anticipated to redefine the life course of over four billion people in the region.

The Geneva Association, a prominent insurance industry think tank, focuses on identifying key trends and strategic issues affecting the sector. Established in 1973, the association contributes to advancing risk management and enhancing understanding of uncertainty in the modern economy through research programs, regular publications, and international meetings.

During the discussion, Pearl highlighted the escalating needs and challenges in aged care design as the global population continues to age. Using case studies from the Shanghai Linfen Hospice Ward and the Adelaide U city, she showcased Woods Bagot’s expertise in age-friendly design, both in China and Australia. She emphasized, “Barrier-free design, Intelligent technology, and thoughtful space planning have made living environments more comfortable and convenient for the elderly.”

Joining Pearl in the roundtable discussion were esteemed panelists from Renmin University, Arup, and HSBC Life. Together, these thought leaders explored strategies to create inclusive and comfortable living environments for the world’s aging population in the context of housing and urban design.
