Woods Bagot received an Iconic Project award for the Over/Under Kiosks—two 150-square-foot structures at New York City’s South Street Seaport. Designed as both architectural installations and functional drink stalls at the Heineken Riverdeck, the kiosks helped to revitalize the historic district in Lower Manhattan. 

Principal David Brown accepted the award on behalf of Woods Bagot and the New York Studio. 

“We’re thrilled to receive this award for the Over/Under Kiosks. These compact structures embody our people architecture philosophy, demonstrating how human experience and placemaking can drive design at any scale.  Even more rewarding than the recognition is witnessing how the New Yorker community engages with the structures, transforming them beyond their original purpose—into seating, shelter, performance spaces and community gathering spots.” 

Since their installation, the Over/Under Kiosks have evolved into emblematic urban design elements, extending beyond their initial purpose to become integral features of the South Street Seaport experience. They have contributed to increased foot traffic and attracted visitors from across the city, offering stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge and East River. The kiosks have become a focal point for various events like the Seaport Sounds summer series, further establishing the Riverdeck as a vibrant social hub.  

Their thoughtful, innovative design exemplifies how architecture can transform urban spaces –blending form and function to provide both shade and seating within a compact footprint. This project has set a new standard for urban microclimate design in New York City, demonstrating how well-conceived, site-specific interventions can revitalize historic districts and foster engaging public spaces. As the Seaport District continues to evolve, the Over/Under Kiosks stand as a testament to the enduring impact of creative urban design.
