The Xiamen convention exhibition center & sports precinct, a large-scale 600 hectare urban design masterplan and detailed architecture proposal, that forges a new center for Xiamen’s cultural and civic heart in the city’s Guiyuan district.
The Xiamen Convention Exhibition Center and Sports Precinct is a vast 600-hectare urban masterplan in the heart of the city’s Guiyuan district. Our proposal forms a key part of an ambitious expansion plan that aims to create a flourishing new cultural district in Xiamen – an attractive port city on China’s southeast coast which is set to become a leading creativity and tourist hub for the region.
The government’s vision is to create a world-class destination that has the capacity to host large-scale international exhibitions and conferences, as well as a wide range cultural, civic and sporting events. The state-of-the-art facilities include 13 exhibition halls, a ballroom and banqueting hall, a 2,500-seat theatre, a museum and an Olympic-standard sports stadium – all interlinked with new residential, mixed-use and commercial hubs and a subterranean high-speed rail interchange.
Talk to Bruno Mendes about Civic and Events
Making the most of the prime coastal location, the striking two-level Convention Exhibition Centre is positioned near the waterfront to offer uninterrupted views of the ocean. The building’s dramatic entrance opens onto a series of beautifully landscaped gardens and generous outdoor public spaces overlooking the harbour.
The Alpha Park Loop is a dramatic feature of the masterplan. The 8km-long elevated pedestrian platform and ecological park links multiple different character zones to facilitate connectivity and create a cohesive destination. The underside of the park loop is used to consolidate parking and support amenities for events. Vehicular access is located away from the centre of the masterplan to maximise public space and prioritise pedestrian access to the overland rail and monorail interchange.
