For Perth Design Week, Woods Bagot hosted a panel discussion on “Renewing the Great Australian Dream”, discussing how to shift Australia’s hearts and minds away from standalone home ownership, towards a more sustainable urban model that prioritises community, accessibility, and vibrancy.
Hosted in Woods Bagot’s Perth studio, the conversation was facilitated by studio chair Kukame McPierzie with panelists including Dr Julian Bolleter (Director, Australian Design Research Centre), Anthony Nelson (Global Creative Director, ERA-co) and Kate Fitzgerald (Director, Whispering Smith).
The conversation included global case studies like the impact of motorisation on LA’s urban landscape, to local examples such as the impact of loss of tree canopy on Perth’s sprawling suburbs. Panellists considered the impact of immigration, urbanisation and modernisation, concluding that densification and development needn’t come at the cost of community character.
