Wynyard Walk wins gold for urban design

Connecting one of Sydney’s busiest transport interchanges to Barangaroo through architectural expression, Wynyard Walk has created a unified identity and civic presence, delivering a socially sustainable piece of infrastructure to Sydney’s CBD.

The organic route of the tunnel connects three city blocks from the historic Wynyard Station to the waterfront commercial precinct. The tight urban fabric – with elevated roads and skyscrapers – presented a landscape requiring careful design to weave the components as part of a cohesive gesture.

“One of the most exciting employment precincts in the world deserves the best possible access and that’s what Wynyard Walk does.”

Designed for longevity, principles of sustainability drove the design solution, with consideration for maintenance over the project’s 100-year life span. Wynyard Walk is a legacy piece of urban infrastructure that makes a strong contribution to the City of Sydney’s wider placemaking strategy.

The Urban Design category celebrates creativity and innovation in the process of designing and shaping cities, towns and villages, and is about making connections between people and places, movement and urban form, nature and the built fabric.

Projects were considered for form, shape and character as well as contributing to making an urban area functional, attractive and sustainable.
