Woods Bagot Elevates Outlet Experience with Sport-Driven Design at Shanghai’s Bailian Qingpu

Woods Bagot contributed to the master plan adjustment and conceptual planning for Phase II of the Shanghai Qingpu Bailian Outlets, while also leading the architectural redesign of the Phase I B9 and B10 retail zones.

Centred around the theme “New Outlets, New Sports,” the renovation introduces a dynamic commercial space that integrates sports, leisure, and fashion. With a total floor area of approximately 9,990 square meters, the three-level structure has been transformed into a mixed-use hub featuring flagship sportswear stores, retail outlets, and themed F&B offerings. The design is innovative while preserving the iconic architectural language of the Outlets, delivering an enhanced consumer journey that reflects evolving market trends.

The design strategy aligns with Zhaoxiang Town’s broader urban development vision, improving the cohesion of the streetscape through a unified roofline extension. Brand anchor stores located at the north and south ends serve as striking visual landmarks, while also optimizing pedestrian circulation.

An open-air “Social Plaza” connects the buildings, enhanced by an interwoven network of sky bridges on the second and third floors that seamlessly link indoor and outdoor spaces. Taking advantage of its riverside location, the design integrates natural waterfront views, creating a vibrant public realm that encourages gathering and interaction. The renovated outdoor plaza also offers flexible space for emerging retail formats, reinforcing the project’s adaptability and openness. More than just a commercial space, it evolves into a lifestyle destination.

As a key node between the main retail street and the east-west green axis, the B9 and B10 precincts are set to revitalize Shanghai Qingpu Bailian Outlets as a new urban landmark—blending shopping, social engagement, and leisure to meet the growing demand for immersive and diversified consumer experiences.
