Nanjing MixC, a new retail project designed by Woods Bagot, recently launched. The project, situated in the center of Nanjing, includes a total commercial GFA of over 90,000 square meters with direct access to Sanshan Street Station on Line 1, and a planned seamless connectivity to Line 5. As one of CR Land’s crowning achievements in East China, the project fills the need of the high-end retail experience in Nanjing with a wide range of new lifestyle commercial offerings and coexists with the city’s cultural legacy.
The commercial facilities in the city’s southern region where the project is located are outdated nowadays and the new generation of customers are in dire need of novel commercial experiences. As a response to the Qinhuai district’s “Elegant Qinhuai” IP idea, the launch of Nanjing MixC is considered as a fresh beginning in the upgrading of the southern area of the city.
“Respecting the collective memory of the local people is at the core of Woods Bagot’s urban regeneration typology. The project team has thoroughly investigated the local cultural connotations of Nanjing in the commercial strategy and spatial design, aiming to make Nanjing MixC a sub-IP of the Qinhuai District renewal,” says Pearl Huang, Woods Bagot Director, Shanghai Studio Chair.
Yunzhang Gongsuo, a historic conservation building of the Yunjin Weaving Association, has been preserved as part of the project, and it is distinctively surrounded by three commercial malls and blocks in units A, B, and C. This emphasizes the collision and fusion of historic architecture and modern lifestyle, resulting in an urban landmark with a more varied consuming experience.
The interior design of the Nanjing MixC incorporates the cultural character, creating a relationship between the past and the present with a modern design approach after researching the historical significance of the Yunzhang Gongsuo, which was built in 1895 for the Yunjin Weaving Industry. The Yunjin weaving process has been included into the spatial design to increase the space’s commercial value.
The atrium is inspired by the traditional Champagne filigree element. In order to maximize the atrium value, plenty of space for outreach and flexibility for future operations was provided with many levels of setbacks. Ceilings of small atriums and aisles accentuate circulation paths and skillfully connect the whole shopping area. The stylish brand area’s design adheres to the Yunjin theme and includes interactive LED displays to heighten the mood. The Food Hall’s design combines harvest-themed features with neutral hues such as champagne gold stripes and wood grain materials. The complex misalignment of the skylight creates stunning variations in light and shadow.
Yunzhang Gongsuo is the focal point of Nanjing MixC. The charming architecture is complemented by outdoor setting, landscaping, and sky garden dining, which creates a relaxed lifestyle. Residents in Nanjing now have access to upscale recreational activities thanks to the entry of international food and beverage brands. A number of new experiences and activities featured with art and technology have been offered. Conceptualized on the “X-Super City”, an art season was developed in Nanjing MixC in partnership with Purple Roof Art Gallery, inviting artists to connect the past with the present via their works, blending classical and art, and bringing new life to the modern commerce of the historical site.
The opening of Nanjing MixC speaks to the fusion of traditional culture and contemporary living. It broadens its impact across Nanjing and the entire Suwan region with cutting-edge fashion resources and integration with city life to resonate younger generation and revitalize the way of life of Nanjing residents.
