Woods Bagot Associate Emily Duncan has received the prestigious Emerging Architect Prize at the 2025 WA AIA Awards, which recognises an individual emerging architect’s contribution to architectural practice, education, design excellence and community involvement, which advances the profession’s role within the public arena.
Woods Bagot Associate Emily Duncan says, “It is an honour to be awarded the WA Emerging Architect Prize. As architects we have a unique opportunity to drive impactful design that delivers lasting social and environmental outcomes. The people I’ve collaborated with at Woods Bagot and in industry to date have taught me the importance of this.”
“I am very excited to continue making accessible, inclusive, resilient and enjoyable spaces and architecture. I look forward to continuing to work with project teams to shape the future of Western Australia and at the same time, continue to champion women in construction,” says Duncan.
The jury says, “Emily Duncan is recognised for her outstanding contribution to architecture through design excellence, industry leadership, and community engagement. Her work on the Morley-Ellenbrook Line and active involvement in professional bodies exemplify her commitment to a future-focused, inclusive profession. Emily represents the next generation of architectural leadership and is this year’s Emerging Architect Prize winner.”
She is invested in city-shaping projects and serves as a member of the Property Council’s Cities, Infrastrcutre and Strategic Precincts Committee, which identifies the policy, economic and sustainability needs for better localised development of key precincts across Perth and major regional centres. The Committee focuses on ensuring the integration of infrastructure delivery with land use planning, promoting sustainable growth, and enhancing the connectivity and functionality of key precincts.
“Being a proud member of the architecture community, my goal has been to create high quality project outcomes and design excellence. It is of the utmost importance to me that these outcomes are achieved through enjoyable, collaborative working conditions, for both clients and colleagues alike,” says Duncan.
Woods Bagot was also recognised for the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line, topping four award categories, including the George Temple Poole Award, which is the top honour in recognition of excellence in architecture and the built environment in Western Australia.
BHP Perth’s Office fitout also received a commendation, for the 40,000sqm transformation of its workplace. The design is inspired by BHP’s operation centres across Western Australia, integrating elements from the region’s diverse and contrasting landscapes. The workplace is structured around interconnected “Villages” to foster collaboration, with the Level 45 Sky Terrace offering an employee-centric hub, providing access to panoramic views that enhance connection to the environment.
