BHP Perth and The International shortlisted for 2026 IDEA Awards

With Interior design by Woods Bagot, BHP Perth and The International have been shortlisted for the Workplace Over 1000 sqm and Hospitality categories, respectively.

The Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) is Australia’s largest independent design awards program. Launched by inside magazine in 2003, the program celebrates the best of Australian interior and product design across 14 categories and seven special awards.

The International – Hospitality

Drawing from the architectural optimism of 1970s Australia, multi-level venue The International celebrates Harry Seidler’s original vision while adapting it for a new generation of Sydney clientele. Timber materiality creates continuity between levels, from matte treatment in more causal spaces to high-gloss lacquer lending sophistication alongside mottled glass and velvet details.

Rising between Harry Seidler’s “Modernist Mushroom” and the heritage-listed MLC Centre, The International draws energy from the precinct’s modernist design principals, celebrating its place within the cultural epicentre of the CBD. One destination, three venues, each level offers distinct yet connected experiences. Open kitchens serve as the conceptual heartbeat of each level, blurring traditional boundaries between service and dining areas.

Woods Bagot Principal and Interiors Lead Tracey Wiles says, “we’ve embraced Seidler’s influence, drawing inspiration from his bold use of colour and form, integration of art and architecture and open spatial planning. The result is a romantic reimagining of mid-century style, tailored for contemporary tastes and sensibilities. Our vision for The International was to create a destination that achieves a delicate balance between calm, pared-back design and bold, mid-century modern influences. It’s a place where the spirit of long lunches and memorable dates lives on but reimagined for future generations. It’s a space that feels both grounded and aspirational.”

BHP Perth – Workplace over 1000sqm

Woods Bagot has delivered one of Perth’s most iconic workplace projects, transforming 40,000sqm into a people-centric workplace.

The design is inspired by BHP’s operation centres across Western Australia, integrating elements from the region’s diverse and contrasting landscapes. In collaboration with Soft Earth and BHP’s Indigenous Engagement team, the project embeds Boodja (country), Boorna (trees), and Wardan (water) into its narrative, seamlessly interwoven into every aspect of the design approach.

The workplace is structured around interconnected “Villages” to foster collaboration, with the Level 45 Sky Terrace offering an employee-centric hub, providing access to panoramic views that enhance connection to the environment.

Sustainability is a core focus, with extensive material reuse, local sourcing, and biophilic design elements supporting a 6-Star Green Star Interiors and 5-Star NABERS Energy rating. The result is a workplace that redefines responsible design – where culture, sustainability, innovation, and people come together to create a holistic working environment.

Winners are determined by the jury, with winners announced at the IDEA Gala in November. In addition, winning projects and designers will be published online and profiled in a special IDEA winners edition of inside magazine.
