The Forest shortlisted for Dezeen Awards

Leading design magazine Dezeen has announced the interiors shortlist for its 2026 Dezeen Awards.

Now in its ninth edition, the Dezeen Awards identify the world’s best architecture, interiors, and design projects annually. Featuring 112 projects across 14 different interior categories, this year’s shortlisted interior projects are located in 26 different countries, from the United States to Kazakhstan.

Ten Australian projects feature in this year’s interior shortlist, including Woods Bagot’s design for The Forest, shortlisted for the “Sustainable Interior” category.

This category celebrates interior design projects that prioritise environmental sustainability, circular design principles, and reduced carbon footprints. The jury also took note of projects showcasing the use of recycled, repurposed, locally sourced, and bio-based materials.

The Forest at the University of Tasmania is a highly connected campus that unifies the existing on-site built elements with integrated landscape, through-block connections and publicly accessible thoroughfares. Stitching together a rich tapestry of piecemeal heritage elements onsite, the existing structures have been deliberately restored and adapted, sewn together with contemporary interventions to create a canvas for discovery and exploration.

“It wasn’t about creating an ego building; less is more on this project,” explains Woods Bagot Design Director Bruno Mendes. “Our role was to curate what was already there. Working with found conditions, we have strived to emphasise the existing and let that drive the conceptual direction of the new.”

As an example of mass timber construction, adaptive reuse and the largest commercial use of biomaterial hempcrete in Australia, the new campus combines innovative and experimental approaches to resilient and sustainable design while reviving an iconic piece of local heritage. The building’s demountable design enables the campus to adapt and flex with the university’s evolving pedagogical needs.

Other projects shortlisted in this category include Kamakura House in Japan by AtMa, Cloudhaus Hotel in Chongqing, China, by RooMoo Design Studio, and  Pizza 4P’s Indonesia by Suha.

The winner of each project category will be announced live at the Dezeen Awards 2026 party on 16 November at the Royal Opera House in London.
