Blending celestial imagination and ecological vitality to create a living city of wonder and connection.
In the rapidly evolving cityscape of Nanjing, Xuanwu Garden City emerges as a new urban landmark – an immersive commercial complex blending astronomy-inspired design with ecological sensibility. Drawing inspiration from the Zijin Mountain Observatory and the biodiversity of Hongshan Forest Zoo, the project creates a unique “Astronomy + Ecology” destination rooted in local identity.
Talk to Billy Ip about Mixed Use
Inclusive Design for an Open City
Garden City goes beyond retail to offer a truly inclusive public space. Partnering with Hongshan Zoo, it brings giant sculptures of popular animals to its sunken plaza, pop-up animal-themed stores, and even a free shuttle – the “Garden City Animal Bus” – connecting directly to the zoo. As a pet-friendly destination, it features outdoor garden paths, indoor pet-friendly zones, and dedicated facilities for “pet families.” Cyclists enjoy bike-in access, rest stations, and indoor riding paths, encouraging low-carbon commuting and urban exploration.
An Immersive Journey from the Underground Up
Directly linked to two metro lines, visitors begin their journey underground, where dynamic lighting recreates the seasonal charm of Nanjing’s plane trees. A sunken plaza with metal domes and vertical greenery blurs indoor–outdoor boundaries, fostering a natural microclimate. Above, public spaces carry the “technology + nature” narrative, anchored by an art installation that merges science, art, and retail storytelling.
Spaces for Families, Play, and Discovery
On upper levels, the “Starry Sky Garden” merges children’s activities with educational experiences. An 8-meter “Tree of Life” installation, combining real plants with light and water effects, transforms the atrium into an “indoor ecological living room.”
Rooftop Observatory – A New Civic Ritual
Atop the complex, a public astronomical observatory extends the city’s stargazing culture. Equipped with telescopes and guided programs, it offers night-sky experiences for residents, students, and astronomy enthusiasts, alongside pet-friendly seating and rooftop terraces.
A Landmark of Warmth, Story, and Exploration
Xuanwu Garden City is more than a commercial hub—it’s a cultural and ecological meeting point where every visit is an exploration, and every interaction redefines the relationship between people and the city.
“We seek to redefine how people engage with commerce and the city. At Nanjing Xuanwu Garden City, exploration drives the design – blending the wonder of astronomy, the playfulness of the zoo, and the energy of a bike-friendly community. The result is a lively urban oasis that inspires new ways of living and connecting in Nanjing.”
