Suzhou Yanlord CANGJIE wins the 2023 RIBA China Landmark 100 Urban Complex. Woods Bagot Principal and Architect Christopher Lye accepted the trophy at the latest award ceremony hosted by the World Architecture Festival in Singapore.
Woods Bagot’s architectural design for CANGJIE is a contemporary reinterpretation of indigenous culture, art and way of life of Suzhou. The retail street encompassing luxury retail, public spaces art and culture goes beyond standard retail environment of commercial complexes and captivates young generation and travelers, who expect innovative, creative, up-to-date, and continuously evolving spaces and facilities.
“CANGJIE’s planning and design are with a city relevance that belongs to Suzhou, and Suzhou only!” says Christopher. “It isn’t just a new city landmark, it’s a catalyst in Suzhou’s ongoing efforts to rejuvenate its historic core by merging cultural heritage with commerce and tourism. It’s an embrace to the new ‘old’.” He further expanded on this during a panel discussion on China’s urban vitality.
