Originally constructed in the 1960s, Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport no longer meets airport and airline needs for various reasons: passenger volume, facilities offered, and gradual subsidence. With this in consideration, the major aviation facility calls for a total removal of airport perimeter facilities to completely reconstruct the terminal processor as well as build a new “24-gate” concourse, dubbed Boarding Area B (BAB) which will serve international as well as normal domestic operations.
In collaboration with HKS Architects, the team is designing both core and shell as well as interior architecture. This will include gate boarding and seating areas, concessions and passenger amenities, reconfiguration of airside systems for new gates, back of the house and support spaces, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system.
Once complete, the terminal is expected, at a minimum, to achieve LEED Gold certification.
