Bristol Soapworks Models Revealed

October 22, 2019

Models of our London studio’s Bristol Soapworks rejuvenation project in Bristol, UK have been released by the project’s developer, First Base. The models showcase the £175 million modernization project that will entail commercial and co-working space as well as food and beverage amenities.

“As someone who grew up in Bristol, I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to help renovate and sensitively restore the Soapworks building,” said Woods Bagot Principal Julian Cross. “We are focused on bringing this iconic asset back into full public use for everyone to enjoy, providing spaces for local artisans, makers and potentially a food hall – creating a modern, vibrant and inclusive place to work and play.”

Complementing the Old Market, a historic district east of Bristol, the restored Soapworks landmark will create a new district within a two-acre site that also includes 165,000 square feet of space from the original buildings. The principal building is Grade II listed and dates back to the 1860s, and formerly served as the headquarters for Christopher Thomas & Brothers—a soap and candle company—before it was acquired by Gardiner Haskins, Bristol’s largest independent department store, in 1958. The original design was inspired by Florence’s historic Palazzo Vecchio.
