At the start of October, the Woods Bagot designed, 1 William Street opened its doors to as part of Brisbane Open House. It was the first time the recently built government workplace was open to the general public. During the day visitors were able to access both the foyer and level 41 including the roof terrace. Woods Bagot representatives showed groups of 45 people around the space explaining the inspiration for the design as well as details about final finishes and design features.
“It is wonderful to hear the story behind the project; the passion, the thought and care that went into the project. You can see it in the result.”
The response to the building was overwhelming, approximately 1,600 visitors went through, with people lined up around the block prior to the building opening at 10 am and some having to be turned away after it closed. Some even waited over 1.5 hours in line to get a glimpse of the inside! All said, it appears from the reaction of guests it was worth the wait. The feedback was extremely positive with locals vocalising on the day how proud they were of having 1 William Street as a part of the Brisbane skyline.
“I am so proud to have 1 William Street in our city. It is such an incredible building. When I fly home now, I love the fact we have an identifiable building that is truly unique to Brisbane. Signifies home.”
“It is even more beautiful inside. I believe it is worth every one of the dollars spent.”
