New Master Plan for Shanghai Prioritizes Wellness and Sustainability

The slated project is in Fengxian New City – one of five newly developed satellite towns which is often referred to as the “Silicon Valley of the beauty and cosmetics industry” for its entrepreneurship and startup-like atmosphere.

The project will not only increase commerce and trade but the quality of living by integrating more gardens, community spaces, reducing pollution, and developing institutions such as museums and libraries. It will also become one of the most connected avenues within this development by building vital pedestrian links that lead to different neighborhoods and public transportation.

SUPERSPACE, the firm’s in-house research design group, built a set of urban design guidelines to provide benchmarks comparable to other similarly sized cities such as Barcelona, Berlin, and Melbourne. This entailed metrics for block sizes, building heights, avenue widths, green space, and residential population densities. This information was combined with site-specific analysis to achieve a placemaking strategy sensitive to the local vernacular. The project is divided into four districts to make it more industry-oriented, including “Industry,” “Transit-Oriented Developed,” “Cultural,” and a healthcare hub dubbed the “Gateway.”

The project’s client is Shanghai Fengxian Nanqiao New City Construction and Development.
