Townsville Base Hospital

Comprehensive Services for Hospital With New Approach to Patient Care.

This 425-bed general acute hospital involved a redevelopment of the existing hospital on a greenfield site in the Queensland suburb of Douglas.

Woods Bagot was appointed as architect and health planner, landscape architect and interior designer to provide comprehensive services from brief development, through design and documentation phases and contract administration.

Woods Bagot aimed to evolve a building in form that is non-institutional, non-intimidating, visually exciting and clear of function and purpose.

A fresh new approach to patient care was the driving force behind the innovative design. The design situates clinical units that incorporate inpatient and outpatient functions together, creating a series of discrete but integrated medical units within the larger hospital.
