Single Leap 2

Intelligent Site Planning & Design for Defence Accommodation.

Woods Bagot was the design consultant for the Single LEAP 2 project which delivered a new standard of accommodation for the serving men and women of the Australian Defence Force.

The project involved the construction of 3015 units across 14 bases in every state and territory except Tasmania under a PPP delivery. The buildings were designed as apartment style or medium density residential with a range of sizes and fitouts to reflect various ranks.

The buildings are laid out in accordance with strong site planning principles and objectives set up by the design team. These principles include passive solar orientation – a minimum of 75% of units face north (or south in climate zone 1).

The building forms are grouped and overlapped to make an informal layout on each site and create pockets of landscape between the buildings for outlook and amenity. The layouts also link into existing movement networks within each base.

There is a range of ancillary buildings such as a recreation pavilion, barbeque shelters, car service and car wash bays, and a boat trailer enclosure to provide a high level of amenity for each resident.

This work followed on from the successful delivery of Single LEAP 1 which provided 1395 units.
