Singapore Changi Airport DFS Wines & Spirits Duplex

The Art of Wines and Spirits.

Airports are establishing their place on the retail map as destinations in their own right, with airport authorities around the globe expanding their retail and F&B offerings to appeal to the discerning tastes of international travellers.

In Asia in particular, this push is leading to increasingly creative and dynamic concepts in airport retail design as vendors endeavour to create ever more unique flagship stores

Woods Bagot Hong Kong studio was engaged by DFS Group to deliver eye-catching and memorable luxury retail stores that would stop travellers in their hurried shuffle between gates, encouraging them to stop and linger. Store designs were developed for Changi Airport Terminals 1, 2 and 3, with major structural alterations undertaken for the two larger stores at Terminals 2 and 3. Woods Bagot created voids in both of these stores and reconfigured the existing facades to maximise retail frontage, while opening up access and sightlines.

In one, a dramatic, sweeping canopy presides over a double-height void, centring the space around the high-profile tasting bar located at its base — the true focal point  the space. An impressive double-storey display of wines and spirits lines the walls of the balconies around the void edge, delivering show-stopping visibility of the merchandise on offer.

Dynamic concepts in airport retail design

The scope included store and retail planning, facades and a complete interiors package, including the coordination of other consultants. All stores were delivered in phases, which allowed the surrounding airport spaces to continue operations uninterrupted. In this way, Woods Bagot successfully navigated the unique and complex challenges presented in an airport environment.

Outside, the design of the highly graphic facades uses 12-metre-high multi-layered glass, integrated LED lighting and graphics to cast a moiré pattern that is visually arresting, demanding the attention of passing travellers. Inside, the interior concept and design is infused with local context and flavour alternately extending the Singaporean experience of departing travellers or welcoming new arrivals. The iconic Raffles Bar was introduced at the upper level — another exclusive first for DFS — while other boutique specialties such as a wine cave, cigar humidors and refined general merchandise offer travellers a unique and bespoke experience.
