Cloudscape: A fusion of design excellence and technology

Cloudscape talks to our primal fears and fascination with clouds and thunderstorms...

"As children we look for anthromorphic forms in the clouds; making sense of the universe by relating to our sense of self. In this installation people can see their own reflection in the cloud and the ever changing aspect of the sky will transform their own reflection during the day and create interaction of light at night,” said Woods Bagot Senior Associate, Nicolas Thioulouse.

If you are anywhere in the vicinity of Sydney’s beautiful Harbour foreshore over the next couple of weeks you simply must take some time out to see Vivid – the southern hemisphere’s largest light installation festival.

A true fusion of design excellence and technology, Cloudscape designed by two of Sydney’s up and coming architects Nicolas Thioulouse and Kim Nguyen Ngoc of Woods Bagot, have joined the multitude of light installations and large scale projections for Vivid Sydney.

Cloudscape is a large silver cloud that hovers above. During the day, it reflects the weather and moves with the wind, and at night people play beneath its canopy creating a new sky. People act as ‘clouds’ casting shadows and reflecting their image over the surface of hundreds of silver balloons.

By interacting with Cloudscape, people create enough friendly energy to activate the cloud which responds with a storm of light effects. The more people interact with the cloud installation, the more Cloudscape will respond.

Cloudscape talks to our primal fears and fascination with clouds and thunderstorms. Our light installation uses interactive architecture as a social media. It creates the conditions for new and forgotten types of relationships between people, a sense of communion with climatic elements, by using electronic, photonic and spatial constructions, said Kim Nguyen Ngoc, Design Leader at Woods Bagot.

In 2011 Vivid Sydney attracted more than 400,000 people, both tourists and Sydneysiders alike, and this year being the fourth year of the festival is expected to attract over 500,000.

The Vivid Sydney Festival will run from 25 May until 11 June 2012.
