United Arab Emirates University

Woods Bagot was invited by the United Arab Emirates University to submit a proposal for the master planning of their national 20,000 student Al Ain campus, including a design concept for the site, which incorporated separate male and female campuses sharing common facilities.

Woods Bagot’s winning proposal, selected from an international field of architects, was based on the use of a unifying and protective lightweight roof structure on a monumental scale to provide a strong definition of the character of the campus. This also functions as a protective element from the extremely hot temperatures experienced. A generous axial spine, reinforced by a lineal body of moving water and punctuated by an avenue of trees will define movement patterns and provide easy way-finding and legibility for campus users.
