Port MacQuarie Base Hospital, NSW

Port Macquarie Base Hospital located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, provides 24 hour Emergency Services, Critical Care, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Medicine, General and Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology, Pediatric Care and Mental Health inpatients (voluntary) and a Mental Health Community Service. This AUS$40million base hospital, is a leading example of privatisation within the Australian health care industry. It was the first public hospital in New South Wales to be designed, constructed and operated by private enterprise.

Woods Bagot was the architect, landscape architect and interior designer for this 160-bed medical facility as part of a consortium comprising Health Care of Australia and Fletcher Construction Australia. The design is an economical two-storey building which minimises travel around the site and maximises operating efficiencies. The result is a hospital which was low-cost to build, is cost effective to run, yet offers the latest in medical services.

The design of the building is simple and direct: a central two-storey glazed spine is the focal point for all circulation, with three ward blocks running along the northern side and associated support areas along the southern side.
