Woods Bagot, in conjunction with Billard Leece Partnership, was appointed as Principal Consultant and Architect for the Mackay Base Hospital Redevelopment. The AUD405 million project will be delivered in a three-stage sequential program and is due for completion in 2013. A detailed study of the existing buildings informed the proposed retention, refurbishment and demolition strategy, offering best value to the overall project and assisting the proposed staging.
The masterplan proposes a new acute hospital, rebuilding of the Main Entrance building as well as a light refurbishment of the Women’s and Children’s, Dental and Allied Health buildings.
The resultant masterplan employed Woods Bagot's Design Intelligence methodology which resulted in a major reform of the existing masterplan. The Woods Bagot masterplan and strategy has resulted in more new construction and less refurbished works, a reduction in the original construction program and a greater alignment with the intended model of care / services. The design also responds to the tropical climatic conditions of Mackay and includes allowances for beyond business-as-usual environmental considerations providing for a more flexible and pragmatic future proofing solution.
