The College of the North Atlantic - Qatar was completed in November 2005 and formally opened by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned on 1st December. This 25 building campus has been developed to provide world-class facilities, in seven faculties, for the training of professionals in engineering, petroleum and gas technology and industrial trades.
With an initial enrolment of 1,800 students, numbers are swelling in the second year to 2,300, and are forecast to grow to 6,000. Valued at around US$150m, 80,000 m2 of diverse facilities accommodate teaching spaces, workshops, offices, cafeterias, sports facilities, an auditorium for 500 people and 6 smaller auditoria. Ten principal courtyards of varying sizes and character provide linking spaces that are heavily utilised for pedestrian movement between buildings, for events and as student and staff gathering places.
One of the largest pre-cast concrete projects completed to date in Asia, the College utilises a variety of 4.5m x 9m exposed aggregate and off-form concrete panels (fabricated off-site in Qatar). A range of textures and shapes are utilised, some punctured with striking patterns to create dramatic variations in light quality. Along the internal face of the panels, handpainted murals provide a vibrant contrast and create animated reflections in the glass beyond.
