The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) officially opened its AU$100m headquarters in 2002, several months ahead of schedule. The building is low energy and at the forefront of sustainable developments, providing a high quality open work environment for its 1800 staff. Two buildings are linked by a large atrium space, crossed by sky bridges that provide views and pathways into all parts of the organisation.
Woods Bagot provided architectural and integrated interior design services, meeting the Bureau’s brief for an open team-based environment. There are a range of special functions, including an auditorium, large meeting and board rooms, cafe, library, data centre, training rooms and executive area. The project has simple but well constructed finishes with warm materials including timber and stone to create a classically elegant environment. The overall impact of the building is powerful, positioning the Bureau as a globally recognised leading organisation.
