Abu Dhabi Special Care Centre

The design of the Special Care Centre (SCC) draws inspiration from the 'Goodheart brick by brick' funding process and architecturally expresses the evolution of the project with a series of distinctive clusters of special needs accommodation.  The layout enables different special care development plans to be implemented all within a fully inclusive, collaborative and specialised environment.

The SCC is a place of care, support, learning and inspiration; all embracing the Special Care Centre community ethos and differentiating Al Bahia as a region of social infrastructure and significance.

The building is devoid of dark, disorientated, oppressive, institutionalised spaces and corridors which are readily associated with this building type. Refreshing, naturally lit galleries, exhibition spaces and transformational learning environments combine to ensure that a reflective, interactive and creative pedagogy is delivered.

The simplicity of the crisp concrete forms, breezeway gardens, temperature modulation, play of natural light, prevention of direct sunlight, provision of shade and legible planning of the buildings adjacencies combine to promote an environmentally sustainable facility..

The resultant massing and landscape is a direct expression of the required functionality. An appropriate selection of materials and construction techniques ensures that the building will complement the adjacent residential context and wider vision of the 2030 Abu Dhabi vision.

All parties involved with this venture look forward to the opening of an exemplar facility which will provide support and care to a wide catchment area for many years.
